4 out of 5 stars Shufflin' all the way to the big dance   January 22, 2004

Ain't nuttin' like an impending Super Bowl to get me geezing over my fave winners of past Super Bowls. That's when I break out my fave season highlight tapes and give `em a view. Bein' the oldest of the bunch in my possession, my 1985 Chicago Bears tape is really startin' to show its age. Wavy lines, a bit o' muddiness here `n' there... it's definitely seen better days. Never the less, it's a real hoot watchin' the Monsters of the Midway with their dominating 46 defense taking the competition out week after week, from opening day right on through to the big dance!

Some great highlights and not-so-great lowlights...

- Week 2 against New England: A Super Bowl preview as the Pats spend a mere 19 seconds in Chicago territory. Bears 20, Patriots 7.

- Week 4 against Washington: RB Walter Payton throws a TD pass to QB Jim McMahon (no, that's not the wrong way `round) in this pathetically easy 45-10 blowout. Well, actually it didn't look easy at the outset as the `Skins leapt to a quick 10-0 lead before the shelling commenced...

- Week 6 at San Francisco: Bein' a Forty-Niner faithful first and foremost, this particular contest was a bit painful for me to watch. Never the less, the opening scene featuring a Niner fan in the stands beating on a big ol' stuffed teddy bear with a wiffle bat was pretty amusing. It also has a neat scene of the late Walter Payton falling into the corner of the end zone for a TD with recent Hall of Fame inductee Ronnie Lott draped on him. Lott gets up and walks away, back facing the camera, as Payton celebrates his score. It was a cool moment with two Hall-of-Famers who are considered by many to be game's all-time best at their respective positions, doing what they do best... what more can a gridiron aficionado ask for? Bears 26, 49ers 10.

- Week 7 against Green Bay: Defensive tackle William "Refrigerator" Perry scores his first rushing TD of the season. Bears 23, Packers 7.

- Week 9 at Green Bay: Perry grabs his first TD reception of the year in a hard-fought 16-10 Bears win.

- Week 11 at Dallas: If there's one thing I like almost as much as a Niner win, is when the BlowBoys get waxed in a big way(not so much as when other teams besides the Niners do it, but hey, you can't have everything)! And the Bears do just that, handing the `Boys their worst defeat ever! Chicago clinches the NFC Central title with the win. Bears 44, Cowboys 0.

- Week 12 against Atlanta: The Bears manage a second straight shutout, winning 36-0.

- Week 13 at Miami: The Bears taste defeat for the first and only time this season as Marino & Co. bolt to a 31-10 halftime lead, and keep Chicago from matching the '72 Dolphins' perfect season by holding on for a 38-24 upset.

- NFC Divisional playoff against the New York Giants: Giants punter Sean Landeta makes the worst pooch punt in NFL history, which the Bears return FIVE YARDS for a TD. It was all Chicago would need as they shut the Giants out 21-0.

- NFC Championship against the L.A. Rams: If there's one team I like to see bitin' it more than the BlowBoys, it's the FlimFlams! And they bite it big here 24-0, victims of Chicago's second straight postseason shutout. Interspersed with the NFC championship footage are highlights from the Patriots' AFC championship victory against the Miami Dolphins-- not that anyone really cares about the eventual Super Bowl losers...

- Super Bowl XX versus New England: Chicago pulls off the ultimate Super Bowl blowout at the time, shellacking the Pats 46-10. The Bears' 46 defense racked up seven sacks, allowed a record 7 rushing yards, and scored twice on an interception-return TD and a safety. William "Refrigerator" Perry took a 1-yard TD plunge to close out the offensive scoring. Sadly, Walter Payton fails to score in his sole Super Bowl appearance.

Thrown in between the game highlights are profiles on various team members and personnel:

- The first is on Walter Payton and his career with the Bears, featuring several of his most incredible runs to daylight. This piece culminates in the play against the Saints that made him the NFL career rushing yardage leader.

- The next piece focuses on William "Refrigerator" Perry and his ascent to folk hero status as both a defensive and an offensive threat. This segment features the show's biggest "groaner" moment when someone refers to Perry as a "well-rounded athlete".

- Then there's a brief look at the Bears' defense and an explanation of how their `46' formation worked to confuse and put pressure on opposing offenses. Also given a few moments is Hall of Fame middle linebacker Mike Singletary, the "soul of the Chicago Bears' defense" as one teammate put it.

- The final profile takes a quick look into the history of the team in general and the 1963 NFL championship team in particular. Also given some time here is Mike Ditka's NFL career, from a tight end with the 1963 champions to his hiring as the Bears' head coach.

In spite of my enjoyment of this program, there were a few things that brought it down a couple notches. For one thing, I wasn't too big on the background music that were included with the highlight segments. And they coulda' thrown in a couple more minutes of Super Bowl footage; It seemed to just blow right by. Otherwise, this presentation is a pretty good addition to any Bears fan's video vault-- right next to that gradually disintegrating copy of "The Super Bowl Shuffle"...
