1 out of 5 stars Unusable before setup was complete   April 9, 2009
T. Capobianco
After fully charging the Edge 305, I set out to configure the unit and ended up with 2 significant problems. First, the unit was not recognized via the USB connector by either my XP or Vista PC. I had the latest Garmin drivers and software installed and this was confirmed by Garmin Support. Both PCs said the USB device was an unrecognized USB device. This problem ended up being a bad USB cable shipped with the EDGE.
Then after 15 minutes of setting up the unit, the LCD is now distorted and unreadable. The LCD is on and every once in awhile you can recognize a menu within the disortion but its useless in its current state. Running the Webupdater from Garmin and overwritting the Edge 305 firmware seems to bring it back to life, but only for seconds, then the display distorts.
Amazon Customer Service was great in dealing with the issue and I am now waiting for my replacement. If it wasn't for Amazon's efficient return policy, I think I would have given up on this unit. 2 defects in one box is a little hard to accept. Garmin support was very helpful but in the end they couldn't do much about the defective LCD screen. Will update when the replacement units comes in.

4 out of 5 stars Works like a champ   March 20, 2009

I've been using the Edge 305 for nearly a month now and its great! I've found the speedometer and the heart monitor are more accurate than my old computer (cat's eye) and the polar watch (forgot the model) I usually mount to my handlebar.

Installing the software was super simple and transferring data is as simple as pulling in the USB cable and watching the data transfer. The charts and information layout is pretty straight forward and easy to read.

My only complaint is that the recording of my position can sometimes float away or it cuts corners (literally). The Smart Record mode seems to work fine but regardless, either recording mode still has minor position recording issues.

Note about the handlebar mount: I've read many many bad reviews about the mount breaking and to date it hasn't happened. Then again, its mounted on a road bike that never goes off-roading. I would expect it to break if you're doing some serious devil-may-care rides in the back country.

Do I miss a color screen? No. Would I pay a few extra hundred dollars for a color screen and the same features as the 305? No.

Would I recommend the Edge 305? Yes! Who would I recommend this to? Anyone road cyclist who wants to track your basic stats and train yourself to be a better rider. My old computer didn't have a cadence monitor and now that I do with this unit, I can see where I'm spinning too hard to too fast.

2 out of 5 stars If only it worked properly...   March 18, 2009

I am a Category 2 racer, and I adopted the Edge 305 many years ago, and wrote a glowing review of it. The first one stopped working. The replacement stopped working. The next replacement stopped working. My wife's unit stopped working. The one that I have now has stopped working properly, randomly shutting off. It's a great design, but the electronics are flaky, with frequent lock-ups, shut offs, changing of program choices, etc. The battery life of 8 hours is woefully inadequate. When it works, it is awesome, and I know every function. The problem is, you need a spare for when you go to turn it on after charging, and it is locked up. I've had six of them so far and THEY ALL DO IT. Not recommended, but I am about to order another one, because MAYBE they've sorted out the problems.

4 out of 5 stars Great tool for keeping you interested in your workout   February 22, 2009

Pros:
- Easy to assemble: less than 1 hour
- Works good: wireless connection to HM and sensors works great
- Battery life is good: Will work for over 5 hours easy
- Motion based web program is a good tool for analyzing your workout.
- Compact design and mounting is good.
- It keeps the workout interesting.
Cons:
- The Garmin program Training Center is not very elaborate. Very basic with ugly maps.
- There is no way to download a map to the device. For that you need the next model that costs much more.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but great exercise tool   February 2, 2009

I've owned my Edge 305 w/ cadence and heart monitor for about 3 weeks now, and put over 300 miles on it and my road bike. So far, I've only had one instance where I had to do a manual reset because the unit would not power up, and that was due to a low battery. Other than that, the only other problem I've had has been with the Training Center (GTC) software. I had the data recording set on "every second", and because that created huge history files, it limited the number of courses created from those files that I could actually upload onto the Edge. There is nothing in the manual or in the help files online that I could find that gave any indication of this. But, that said, a few e-mails to a Garmin rep, and the problem was solved. Another minor problem I had is getting the sequence down to use the course function. In order to use it, you have to dial up the course you want first, enter "do course", and then you have to remember to hit the start/stop button. You must do it in this order, and can't hit the start/stop button first, and then dial up the course. This is just a learning curve problem on my part, but still a bit annoying that the unit's software is somewhat inflexible.

So, as I said, it's not a perfect unit, but it is a great tool for the money. I've had no problem with the HR monitor or cadence monitor. No problem with the unit shutting off on bumpy roads, or any of the other common problems you might read about in other reviews. It's a great motivator, particularly for those who like to ride alone or can't always go on group rides. It's also very gratifying to be able to track the miles and routes you've taken, and the steep hills (or not so steep!) you've climbed. The HR monitor is also a great way to pace yourself if you're starting on a long ride and tend to push too hard at the beginning when your legs are feeling good.

So, I'm giving it four stars. It would be five if it came with a little better documentation (for both GTC and the Edge), and if the unit software was slightly more flexible and intuitive for slow people like myself. The availability of a better map for GTC that was Mac-compatible would also be nice, but not enough of a problem for me to worry about.
